The Peter Pan Motel
110 N 13th St 1963-2006-2023
The boy who never grew up… Such a classic tale of 2 worlds. First, you have the Darling family in busy London and the second, Neverland, home of the lost boys. To express these two vastly different worlds, I made a reversible backer of 2 equally different exotics.
To represent London, the proper world, I chose Katalox for its rich, dark, formal feel, making this side “The Shadow”. For Neverland, I wanted something dirty, tropical, and bright. The variations in the Mango side give the piece a lighter and immature feel, dubbing this side “The Lost Boys”.
The frame is obviously in the style of the MCM atomic era frames, but upon closer look, you can see the shape of the frame is in the silhouette of the famed Pan. Soaring across the sky in search of his shadow before returning to his Neverland.
*The mat can be changed relatively easily, but I don’t recommend doing it often due to it involving opening the frame, weakening the points, and exposing the floating illustration each time
